If you’re prepping for the holidays this month, here are five top tips to help you get a head-start on retail’s busiest times of year…

  1. Create a plan

Before you start prepping for Christmas, it’s vital to outline your plan for the coming season. Start now and go through to at least the beginning of January for maximum preparation advantage points.

  1. Look at your data

Analyse past data and collect new data using a dedicated retail management software system. The holiday season is a high-volume period for retailers, and that means there are lots of opportunities to gather shopper information. If you’re not collecting that data, or worse, you’re collecting it incorrectly, then you’re missing out on major opportunities that can help your business all year round.

  1. Holiday sales and promotions

Your holiday-planning process should include which promotions, sales and offers you’ll be running, as well as how you’re going to use marketing and advertising to spread the word.

  1. Forecast for demand

Forecasting accurately can make or break your season regardless of how effective your promotions are. Overstocking can leave you left with a lot of unsellable merchandise after the busy season. But on the flip side, you could also run into out-of-stocks. And there’s nothing worse than missing out on sales.

  1. Seasonal staffing

During such a high-volume period, you’ll need to staff up with some new temporary team members to help get through the busy push. Start off by offering extra shifts to your current employees. Gauging that interest will help you determine how many new people you need to add to your team.
