Leading UK occasionwear designer Ann Balon celebrates 30 years in business this year, with three decades of making women feel confident, elegant and glamorous.
Balon started her eponymous business following a holiday on the Amalfi coast where she was inspired by the region’s precious lace materials and intricate dressmaking techniques.
Observing traditional dressmaking practices, her team of experienced seamstresses craft timeless evening and formal wear from the finest lace. Fabrics are hand-cut, batch-dyed and uniquely textured by means of stone-washing with light porous pumice from Mount vesuvius.
Production is time-consuming, with artisanal techniques and hand-crafted applique work resulting in classic, romantic pieces that enhance women’s figures. The same timeless aesthetic is continued in her ranges for the fuller figure. Soft Italian style tailoring and delicate lace are complimented by eye-catching embellishments and subtle design details to both flatter and add flair. Skirts are fitted with discreet elasticated waistbands, dresses are lined with lightweight, stretchy slips and jackets or full length coats add polish to any outfit.
In the years since launching, the business has become a family affair: Balon’s husband George took charge of all administration and promotional work, while their daughter became an essential part of the team at an early stage following her graduation from university, working alongside her mother on the designs as well as on sales and modelling.
