Beast from the East drives online sales growth

The latest retail sales figures reveal growth in February, however the uplift is not enough to make up for a weak December and January. According to the IMRG Capgemini Index, online sales figures rose by +13.1 per cent year-on-year in February. This was largely impacted by the ‘Beast from the East’, which covered the UK in a blanket of snow for the last week of the month. The fashion sector was one of the strongest growth areas with a +14.9 per cent rise on the same month last year. Meanwhile, the latest results from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) also show a 13.7 per cent rise in annual online sales, with British shoppers spending an average £1,230 million over the internet each week this February compared with £1,193 million in January. Bricks-and-mortar sales volumes were also up by 0.8 per cent compared with the previous month. However, as this follows two months of decline, statisticians say the underlying three-month picture is one of falling sales.
