“Retailers need certainty,” Bira has warned following government’s return to Plan A announcement.
From Thursday 27 January, face coverings will no longer be required by law in any setting and venues will no longer need to use the NHS Covid Pass. The government says the changes are down to the success of its booster programme, which has seen over 30.5 million people in England receive a third vaccine.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO at Bira, comments on the announcement: “It is a positive sign to see the Omicron wave abating, but we hope that the decision to remove some of the regulations is based on science rather than political reasoning.
“Retail businesses need certainty and we want to be sure that retailers do not need to re-introduce these measures in the near future because the government has acted in haste. We now hope that the government can focus on business support as we look to recovery.”
