The Dressing Room founder stars in Sir Peter Black’s High Street Heroes artwork

Deryane Tadd, owner of St Alban’s The Dressing Room, has been chosen to represent Small Business Fashion Retailers in a specially commissioned artwork by legendary British artist, Sir Peter Blake.

Commissioned by American Express as part of Small Business Saturday, the collage of shopkeepers entitled High Street Heroes aims to shine the spotlight on small and independent businesses and celebrate the nationwide day that encourages consumers to shop local.

Sir Peter Blake, often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, is best known for the iconic album cover he made for The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club BandHis new artwork features 61 shopkeepers holding the tools of their trade from 40 different small businesses across the country.

Sir Blake commented: “Small shops and the Great British Shopkeeper have been at the forefront of British culture for hundreds of years now.  The notion of a ‘Nation of Shopkeepers’ is embedded in our folklore and the wonderful variety of today’s independent shops as well as the character that small businesses bring to a local area make them an ideal subject matter for modern pop art. Having worked at a local butcher at the age of 13 I have also experienced the dedication and hard work that goes into running a small shop. It is for all these reasons that I am thrilled to be lending my support to a campaign that champions small businesses.”

Of his starring part in the artwork, The Dressing Room’s Deryane Tadd commented: “The Dressing Room was set up to provide tailored shopping experiences for customers, and like many small shops we try to make the high streets unique. It’s great that someone of Sir Peter Blake’s stature is lending his support to small businesses and we’re very proud to be a part of it.”

Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign that encourages people to shop in local, small, independent businesses across the country on Small Business Saturday, 6 December.  The Dressing Room will be offering lots of treats for customers on the day, including double loyalty points, prize draws and social media competitions.
