Danish brand Esencia is the collaborative effort of two mothers; one Bolivian and one Japanese, both with a passion for bringing the cultures and values of their native countries to a line of luxury and sustainable knitwear.
Founded in 2006 by Yoko Meinertz and Erica Pedersen, first with childrenswear followed by womenswear in 2011, the two set out with the same objective to produce high quality natural products with simple designs, making use of the craftsmanship of indigenous women and artisans from the Andes region.
Made from the finest natural alpaca and llama fibres and organic pima cotton, Esencia’s knitwear collections combine Bolivia and Peru’s tradition of high quality textiles with a Japanese integrity of design. The result is a unique brand intended to inspire modern people in a natural and simple approach to living.
Cooperating only with suppliers who value the principles of Fair Trade and sustainability means the duo can also ensure production is entirely Fair Trade certified.
For AW15, the collection was shot in Northern Denmark’s icy winter, capturing the stark beauty of the landscape in perfect contrast to the brand’s soft knits and silhouettes. A relaxed but active collection is built around easy layering pieces, including a reverse herringbone sweater with contrast details, new trousers and on-trend sweat pants in softest alpaca, and two suits-all shift dress styles.
Slightly cropped sweaters with boat necks come in fashion colours amber and water to appease fashion-forward shoppers, while the classic natural alpaca shades of un-dyed charcoal, cocoa, dove and ivory sit perfectly with the current mood for the simple and refined.
