Staying positive can be difficult when there’s so much doom and gloom in the media. But if there’s one thing fashion indies are remarkably good at, it’s providing customers with respite from the everyday stress of life.
One indie that’s creating a safe haven for shoppers is Stick and Ribbon, which has just moved into new premises in one of Nottingham’s prime city centre locations. For owner Sally Longden, who runs the store with her 23-year-old daughter Ellie Philpott, it marks an exciting new era for the business. Inside she aims to offer shoppers an uplifting experience whether they’re buying a £300 dress or £25 tee. And with the likes of Flannels, Hugo Boss and Paul Smith’s flagship in the local vicinity, the move is already proving to be a hit with the area’s droves of fashion fans. Turn to page 69 for the full interview.
The promise of sunshine, Jubilee parties and summer events have also provided an extra boost to fashion sales. Data released by the Office for National Statistics reveals that shoppers bought more clothes in April compared to March, despite the cost-of-living crisis. With this in mind, this issue is full of new ideas to make the most of the season. We pick out some modern occasionwear pieces on page 28 to inspire your special event edit. Plus, we highlight some chic suppliers to have on speed dial for when your store needs a refresh on page 30.
Last but not least, if you haven’t already submitted your entry, there’s still time to take part in this year’s Boutique Star Awards. There are six categories up for grabs for independent retailers, including Womenswear Independent of the Year and Social Media Strategy of the Year. There are so many advantages of being shortlisted and entering is completely free. We outline 10 top reasons to take part in this year’s competition on page 44 and also share some top tips to help you create a winning entry on page 46. We also reveal the venue for this year’s glitzy winners’ party, taking place this November, on page 11.
