This year’s Women 1st Shine Awards will mark the first year that the nominations are open to women in retail, alongside the usual hospitality, tourism, and travel industries.
Women 1st, the initiative that aims to improve gender division across the tourism and visitor economy sector, launched the awards to celebrate the achievements of women in hospitality, leisure, travel, and tourism, as well as the mentors and businesses in these industries that actively support the career developments of women.
Now in its 10th year, the 2014 1st Women Shine Awards will award excellence in categories including Rising Star, Outstanding Entrepreneur, Mentor of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Woman of the Year.
Simone Roche, director of Women 1st, said of the decision to extend the awards to the retail industry, “Since the launch of Women 1st, it has become clear that all of the UK’s service industries face similar challenges when it comes to women in senior roles, so we’ve grown to incorporate passenger transport and, now, retail.”
She adds, “By brining the whole tourism and visitor economy together for the Shine Awards, we can really celebrate the huge contribution these industries make to the UK economy and the women that are leading the way, as well as up and coming female talent.”
Nominations for the Women 1st Shine Awards will close on 7th July and can be made at Women1st.co.uk/awards. The awards are free to enter and the winners will be announced at a dinner at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square on 16th September.
