Ashbourne in Derbyshire is aiming to boost footfall with a summer calendar of family-friendly events designed to draw shoppers into its town centre.
Following the regeneration of its Market Place as part of the town’s £15.2 million government-backed Ashbourne Reborn transformation project, the events are being organised by Ashbourne Town Team and Discover Ashbourne CIC in partnership with Ashbourne Town Council.

Young Ideas owner Anne Wright, whose flagship store is based in the town centre, has played a pivotal role in the drive to improve Ashbourne, chairing Ashbourne Town Team and leading the organisation of the events.
The first – Ashbourne Dog Day Out – has already been declared a success, with organisers reporting a boost in trade for local businesses.
Further events are planned this summer, including the Ashbourne Classic Car Festival on 2 August and the second annual Big Fashion Day Out on 6 September.
“These events are about far more than simply putting on entertainment,” says Wright. “We want Ashbourne to be known as a vibrant, welcoming and creative town which supports local businesses and gives people reasons to visit, stay longer and enjoy everything the town has to offer.

“The feedback following Dog Day Out has been incredibly positive. It was wonderful to see people supporting local businesses while enjoying everything the event had to offer.
“There has been a huge effort from local volunteers, businesses and organisations to help make these events happen and we are incredibly grateful for all the support being shown across the community.”
The initiative follows research recently published by Spring & Autumn Fair and Faire, which found collaboration remains one of independent retail’s most underused growth strategies despite its potential to boost footfall and strengthen local high streets.
